Jana – Failed evacuation. A child died of starvation.

Jana was one of the patients we evacuated from the north of the Gaza Strip to the south in April 2024. She was eight years old and she was starving. Her condition should never have happened. The treatment she needed exists – it just does not exist within the Gaza Strip because Israel blocks it wherever possible: humanitarian workers, medicine, medical equipment, food. Under these conditions, a starving child has no chance of survival in Gaza. Like Fadi, Jana had to be taken out. So we evacuated her to the south. She was supposed to leave the Gaza Strip completely within a few days to receive the long-term care abroad that she needed to survive. That is exactly where it failed.

Israel denied Jana's mother an exit permit. An eight-year-old child could not travel alone, so the evacuation abroad was cancelled. The UN continued to seek a travel permit for her mother. It never came. In the meantime, Jana's evacuation was delayed again and again. During the ceasefire, her family returned to the north. Then the blockade closed again, food ran out, and hunger returned. Her two-year-old sister Jouri starved to death.

She died in August 2025 of malnutrition. Jana died a few weeks later, on September 17, 2025, in a hospital in Gaza City. She was nine years old. Even with the support of UNICEF and the WHO, her departure could not be secured. Israel blocked her at every step until what was intended was achieved. Jana is dead. She is one of many signs of what I can only describe as a genocide against the Palestinian population.
